My Breast Cancer Journey – Brooklyn
We asked some of the women who were touched by #breastcancer to share their stories with us, special thanks to Brooklyn for sharing her inspiring story🥰:
“I literally thought to myself what are the chances? When I found out I was BRCA2 positive in 5 years ago, they suggested I do the prophylactic mastectomy and I remember saying to my doctor, c’mon what really are the chances?! I know having the gene increased my risk of having breast cancer in my life up to 80% but I thought I would enjoy my boobs for a bit, have kids, then get the prophylactic mastectomy and a nice new boob job. Funny how life goes.
In March 2020, I never had a lump or sign/symptom, but my annual breast MRI came back with suspicious activity. After a biopsy, I was diagnosed with stage 0 DCIS. I was told I would only have to get a single mastectomy and no further treatment. I opted for the double mastectomy given my high risk and the pathologist evaluated my tissue and nearby lymph nodes and found there was lobular cancer throughout (which is harder to see on imaging) and in some of my lymph nodes. It was so scary to think that the MRI didn’t catch that.
Then, my staging went up to 1b and I followed up my surgery with 3 months of chemotherapy, a complete reconstruction with implants, 5 and 1/2 weeks of radiation, and I am currently doing 10 years of hormone therapy. I’m a fighter and I am blessed to be on the other side, but for now, I’m taking it one day at a time! 💕
